Let’s dedicate a moment to a New Yorker’s sixth main food group: pizza. It’s a sacred thing to us, and we take it very, very seriously–there is a reason why NYC is the #1 best U.S. city for pizza addicts and two iconic pizza spots in the city are among the most photographed in the U.S. And this is precisely why we’re always trying to seek out the best of the best. And we’re not the only ones.
That’s all to say The Best Pizza Awards have certainly caught our attention. Inspired by the ethos of The Best Chef Awards, The Best Pizza Awards works to “break down barriers in the pizza world and spotlight authentic craftsmanship, bold innovation, and diverse voices that are shaping the future of this iconic dish.” And their Best Pizza Selection 2025 is here!
And, well, it goes without saying that NYC made the cut.
NYC’s beloved Una Pizza Napoletana made it to the top 20, coming in at #17. And we do think it’s important to mention that 15 of the top 20 are pizza places in Italy, who clearly know a thing or two about pizza, so look at NYC holding its own! Una Pizza Napoletana ranked #28 in 2024 and #19 in 2023.
Anthony Mangieri is the acclaimed American pizzaiolo and founder of Una Pizza Napoletana. Born into an Italian-American family, Mangieri developed a deep passion for pizza and bread-making from a young age before opening his first bakery, Sant Arsenio, at 22. In 1996, Mangieri launched Una Pizza Napoletana in Point Pleasant Beach, which soon became a cult favorite.
Over the years, the restaurant moved from New Jersey to New York City, then to San Francisco, and finally back to Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where it’s sat since March 2022. And, truthfully, Mangieri is no stranger to achievement–Una Pizza Napoletana has been named the best pizzeria in the entire country multiple times by 50 Top Pizza, along other awards!
And it’s easy to see why, considering Mangieri insists on making every dough ball himself, refusing to franchise or expand, in order to maintain absolute control over quality. The pizzeria focuses on naturally-leavened, wood-fired pizzas, and hungry New Yorkers can’t get enough–there’s a reason why it constantly draws lines of customers and receives rave reviews. Pies include the following:
- Marinara – San Marzano Tomatoes, Amalfi Wild Oregano, Garlic, Basil, Sicilian Sea Salt, EVOO
- Margherita – San Marzano Tomatoes, Buffalo Mozzarella DOP, Basil, Sicilian Sea Salt, EVOO
- Bianca – Buffalo Mozzarella DOP, Garlic, Basil, Sicilian Sea Salt, EVOO
- Filetti – Cherry Tomatoes, Buffalo Mozzarella DOP, Garlic, Basil, Sicilian Sea Salt, EVOO
- Cosacca – San Marzano Tomatoes, Pecorino Romano, Basil, Sicilian Sea Salt, EVOO
