Us New Yorkers sure do have a sense of humor, but one thing we don’t take lightly is our pizza. Proudly wearing the title of the “#1 Best U.S. City For Pizza Addicts,” we don’t mess around when it comes to this simple pleasure.
So you can imagine we weren’t in any way surprised when 50 Top Pizza released their pizzeria ranking for 2023, and NYC’s Una Pizza Napoletana came in hot (and cheesy) at the #1 spot once again, officially being dubbed the “Best Pizzeria in the United States.”
It’s an important achievement for owner Anthony Mangieri.
Una Pizza Napoletana is the sixth iteration of Mangieri’s pizzeria, focusing on naturally-leavened, wood-fired pizzas.
As a pioneer of Neapolitan-style pizza in the United States, Mangieri’s lifelong dedication to pizza began as an early fixation on the food. He first opened Una Pizza Napoletana in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, in 1996 before relocating it to the East Village in 2004.
And, understandably, it didn’t take long for the pizzeria to draw lines of customers and rave reviews.
After a short relocation to San Francisco, Una Pizza Napoletana reopened in the Lower East Side in March 2022.
Now you already know NYC found its way on the list more than once–it’s actually the most represented city on the list, with an impressive ten pizzerias present in this year’s guide, including:
- Ribalta (4th)
- Don Antonio (7th)
- Song’ E Napule (15th)
- Kesté (16th)
- Ops (17th)
- Pizza Secret (19th)
- Salsa (34th)
- Pasquale Jones (39th)
- San Matteo – Pizzeria e Cucina (50th)
“New York has been deemed one of the greatest cities in the world for pizza,” said project curators Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro, and Albert Sapere back in 2023, “and it is the city with the most pizzerias in the world, with more than 7000 businesses which serve pizzas…The American pizza Movement is very active right now, with a new generation of artisans who are ever more careful with the quality of their product and their ingredients. It is a trend that has been particularly noticeable over the last year.”
Now if only our pizza prices will stop rising!
