And just as we love to buy from locally-owned shops that make our NYC communities so special, it’s important to make a concerted effort to support Black-owned businesses, who often face disproportionate challenges.
In fact, according to NYC Gov., Black individuals only own 2% of NYC businesses (though they account for more than 20% of New Yorkers), and Black-owned businesses are less likely to survive after five years compared to others.
From fashion brands and interior design shops to yummy bakeries, Black-owned businesses help make New York the cultural epicenter that we love so much – plus they’re just awesome spots you really don’t want to miss out on.
Separated by borough, here’s a list of 30 Black-owned businesses you can support all year long.
We also love following Black-Owned Brooklyn to see what new Black-owned businesses are popping up in the borough, like NYC’s first vinyl record craft beer bar.
In addition, Brooklyn-based female entrepreneur Mandy Bowman created an app, titled “The Official Black Wall Street App,” that connects users to Black-owned and operated businesses in their area.
