Cloudy Donut amassed an impressive amount of social media fame during the pandemic after opening up in Baltimore back in 2020, and now this vegan pastry sensation has made its way to NYC!
Derrick and Justin Faulcon are the ones behind Cloudy Donut, which is a 100% vegan, small-batched, gourmet donut shop that features 44 mouthwatering flavors that rotate on a weekly basis for humans and pups!
The fluffier-than-ever donuts (hence the brand name) use ingredients like applesauce, coconut milk, and shortening in place of animal products, and they’re fried in liquid vegetable shortening. You’ll find flavors such as Grapefruit Mimosa, Salted Caramel Whiskey, Bananas Foster, Snickerdoodle, and more. Pups can feast on flavors such as Lil Bow Wow (a cookies and cream donut with vanilla glaze and crumbled dog treats) and Snoop Doggy Donut (a peanut butter glazed donut topped with cheddar dog treats).
There’s way more to this donut shop than just tasty treats, though! Cloudy Donut is a Black-owned business that “loves to reverse gentrify,” shop operator Zewiditu Jewel stated to Brooklyn Magazine. “It’s this ideology that we come in as a Black business to affluent neighborhoods for visibility not only to Black people but also to places that maybe aren’t used to seeing Black business owners.”
“When we knew we wanted to come to New York, everyone was like, ‘Go to Bed-Stuy, go to Harlem.’ While we love those places and I’ve lived in both areas, we wanted to do something different,” Jewel told the outlet.
This mindset is what resulted in the opening of the shop in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Brooklyn–Brooklyn Heights. It’s located at 14 Columbia Place and open Friday-Sunday 10a.m. – 5p.m.
So, why not see for yourself if these donuts are really as fluffy as their name claims them to be–we know we will!
