The polls closed as of 9pm on Tuesday, June 24th, and voters have been anxiously anticipating the NYC Primary results since.
Political experts predicted a tight race between Democratic mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, and shortly after the 9pm deadline, it appeared Mamdani took a considerable lead.
Despite Andrew Cuomo conceding the race to Zohran Mamdani around 10:30pm, New Yorkers are still waiting for official results.
As of 12:30am on Wednesday, June 25th, only 93% of the votes are in. Here’s what’s next.
When will the NYC Primary results be in?
Although we don’t have official results from Primary Night, as experts predicted, we do have a strong lead with Zohran.
The ranked choice voting system — which is only used during primary and special elections — is the main reason New Yorkers should expect the results to surface over the next several days.
Cuomo conceded around 10:40pm.
“Tonight was not our night,” the former governor told supporters, according to The New York Times.“Tonight is his [Mamdani’s] night. He deserved it. He won.”
The publication further revealed that it is possible that Cuomo could run in November as an independent, though it is unclear what his future plans will entail.
How does ranked choice voting work?
According to NYC Votes, “with Ranked Voting, New Yorkers can rank up to five candidates in their order of preference instead of choosing just one candidate.” This system also permits voters to stick to one choice if they so choose.
Per The New York Times,”if neither man gets more than 50 percent of the first-place votes on Tuesday, a series of subsequent rounds will tally the final results based on voters’ second-through-fifth-place choices.”
The publication further adds, “If not, voters’ backup choices are scheduled to be tabulated on July 1st.”
At 10:40pm, Mamdani was closest to that threshold at 43.5%
He addressed a crowd in Astoria, Queens, anxious and determined for the future. ““My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City.”
One of Mayor Eric Adams’ advisors, Frank Carone, is not worried about the Democratic nominee, regardless of who it will be. He told The Times, “We are not running against anyone. They’re running against us. We’re very confident that when the time comes in November, Mayor Eric Adams will be re-elected.”
