Although the NYC primary results have yet to be finalized, it’s clear that Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is on track to become the Democratic nominee in the upcoming mayoral race.
Around 10:40pm on Election Night, former Governor Andrew Cuomo — the other frontrunner of the race — conceded.
“Tonight was not our night,” the former governor told supporters, according to The New York Times.“Tonight is his [Mamdani’s] night. He deserved it. He won.”
Zohran Mamdani declares victory
Mamdani gathered to address supporters in Astoria, Queens, where he declared victory.
“Tonight, we made history,” he said. “In the words of Nelson Mandela: ‘It always seems impossible until it is done.’ My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”
Even though he accepted the nomination for the Democratic candidate, the race is still technically not over: due to the ranked voting system, one candidate is declared a winner upon reaching 50% of the vote. Mamdani is in the clear lead with nearly 44% to Cuomo’s 36%. Per The Times, since neither candidate reached 50%, backup choices are scheduled to be tabulated on July 1st.
