The disco era is making a one-night-only comeback ahead of Fashion Week—and it’s all thanks to Valentino. The Italian luxury fashion house is reopening Studio 54, the iconic NYC nightclub, to celebrate its limited-edition Rendez-Vous Ivory Collection.
Although thousands would jump at the chance to step foot on the Studio 54 dance floor once more, or to get a peek at what it once looked like in all of its unrestrained, glittering glory, getting a spot at the immersive Valentino event will be even harder than the door was back in the 70s.
It will be invite-only, welcoming a curated list of fashion insiders, former Studio 54 patrons and friends of the fashion house.
Studio 54 first opened its doors in 1977, taking over the former Gallo Opera House and CBS TV Studio. It quickly became a stronghold for NYC nightlife and disco culture.
True to the city’s 1970s scene, it became an uninhibited oasis, home to extravagant parties, some questionable party favors and a whole lot of disco. Everyone from Andy Warhol to Cher, Mick Jagger to Diana Ross, had a fun-filled night at the theater-like venue in its prime.
Studio 54 may have been a legacy establishment, but in 1980, the clubs’ owners, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, were convicted of tax evasion. As a result, the nightclub was forced to close. New ownership attempted to revive the club, but with little success.
Nowadays, New Yorkers can still step inside the building as it’s been reconfigured for Broadway performances into the Roundabout Theatre at Studio 54.
Valentino’s new Rendez-Vous Ivory Collection, a special edition of fragrances and lipsticks, evokes the same glitz and glamour that became synonymous with Studio 54.
Thus, there was no better venue to celebrate the exciting launch. Even the collection’s campaign, shot by photographer Carlijn Jacobs, hones in on the allure of nostalgic New York City nightlife.
Valentino’s Studio 54 resurgence will take place on September 10th, just before the kickoff to New York City Fashion Week 2025 from September 11th through September 16th.
