New Yorkers who use the Q70 bus service from 74 Street-Broadway/Jackson Heights Roosevelt Avenue subway station to LaGuardia Airport can hopefully expect $160M worth of improvements on the way, according to Governor Kathy Hochul’s newest plans.
The Q70 bus, otherwise known as the LaGuardia Link, has operated as an easy and environmentally-friendly choice to get to the airport. Governor Hochul made the shuttle service completely free back in 2022, and she just unveiled plans to further improve the bus line with a hefty new investment.
Hochul outlined that the $160M would go towards faster, more reliable and more frequent service on the Q70 bus. Other enhancements would include traffic signals that prioritize the bus on its route along Roosevelt Avenue and Broadway, an exclusive bus lane, expanded service during peak hours, a new bus pick-up and drop-off area near Terminal C and more.
“The transformation of LaGuardia airport into a world-class destination that is recognized for its excellence is an integral part of our bold vision for a new era in New York, and that starts with much needed enhancements in transportation to and from the airport,” Governor Hochul said. “This new funding will advance several transportation projects, provide new bus lanes, reduce congestion and overcrowding, and install new traffic lights to prioritize buses into the airport. I’m proud to celebrate these accomplishments and look forward to creating a world-class transit option.”
An official vote on the funding proposal will be made by the Port Authority Board of Commissioners on March 27th, 2025.
“This proposal will fund the development of the faster, more reliable mass transit link the expert panel envisioned and passengers traveling to our world class LaGuardia Airport deserve,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole echoed the sentiment, stating “the finest airports deserve equally modern and efficient public transportation connections, which is why the Port Authority is investing in vastly improved bus connections to LaGuardia Airport.”
