Amtrak’s most modern train yet is readying to hit tracks in 2026. The 125mph Amtrak Airo trains will provide riders with a more sustainable option to improve both efficiency and comfort.
Amtrak purchased a total of 83 Airo trains to operate on various routes across the nation, including: the Northeast Regional, Empire Service, Amtrak Virginia Services, Keystone Service, Amtrak Downeaster, Amtrak Cascades, Maple Leaf, New Haven-Springfield-Greenfield Service, Palmetto, Carolinian, Pennsylvanian, Vermonter, Ethan Allen Express and Adirondack.
More than 13,500 parts were manufactured in the U.S. with nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states. “As we build to support the soaring demand for train travel, Amtrak Airo is creating jobs even before the trains are on the track.” Amtrak President Roger Harris
The new trains will not only offer more high tech amenities, such as 5G enabled Wi-Fi, touchless restroom controls and digital customer information systems, but reduce travel time without having to change engines like other models do. Older train models in particular require locomotive changes when they switch between electric and non-electric tracks. Amtrak’s Airo trains have resolved this issue with seamless power changes between the two.
In terms of aesthetic purposes, passengers can enjoy stunning views along their journey through new panoramic windows that will let onlookers capture more beauty than ever before. Ergonomic seating will provide greater legroom, moveable headrests and seatback tablet-holders.

Famished customers can stop in the Airo trains cafe cart to enjoy a contemporary food service and self-service options.
Moreover, passengers can rest assured they’re riding sustainably, as the Airo trains will generate 90% less particulate emissions in diesel operations.
“Finding the cleanest technologies to carry customers across our vast network will be transformative as we deliver a new era of rail,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “We are excited to take this important step toward providing safe and reliable service with a smaller impact on the environment.”

The new Amtrak Airo trains will aid the company in moving closer to its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
