We’re nearing the end of the road—or should we say the end of the track—for an iconic piece of NYC history.
After more than 30 years of swiping, New Yorkers now have just 30 days left to purchase or refill MetroCards before the system transitions fully to OMNY.
We know change is hard, especially when it means saying goodbye to something that’s been part of the city’s rhythm for over three decades.
But don’t worry, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to navigating the transition from MetroCard to OMNY so you can keep riding smoothly, stress-free, and now swipe-free.
🗓️ How much longer will MetroCards be available for?
MetroCards can only be purchased or refilled until December 31st. After the cutoff, existing cards will work until they expire or until swipe readers are removed. No new value can be added once sales end.
💵 How can I purchase an OMNY card?
OMNY cards are available at vending machines located at stations, MTA customer service centers, and retail partners, including drugstores, convenience stores, and transit hubs. They can be purchased with cash, credit, or debit, and function like a standard reloadable transit card. Simply tap to enter and refill as needed.

💰 How does the OMNY Fare Cap work?
This transition includes some great news for commuters, or anyone who finds themselves tapping often. The OMNY fare capping feature is designed to give riders the financial benefit of a 7-Day Unlimited Pass without requiring you to pay the cost upfront.
Riders simply tap and pay as you go, and the system guarantees you’ll never spend more than $34.80 (the cost of 12 rides) in any 7-day period.
Once you hit that cap using the same card or device, all subsequent subway and local bus rides for the rest of the week are free.
Just make sure to use the same payment method for every tap, or the system won’t combine your trips! Riders can track how close they are to reaching the cap on the official OMNY app.
⬇️ Does OMNY offer Reduced-Fare options?
Yes, the Reduced-Fare MetroCard is being replaced by Reduced-Fare OMNY. Eligible customers can link their Reduced-Fare account to OMNY and receive the same half-fare benefits, including a weekly fare cap of $17.

📱 How can I use the OMNY card from my phone?
It can be a hassle to dig through your wallet or bag for a card when you’re in a rush, so it’s great news that the OMNY system accepts digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay). Just tap your phone or smart device on the OMNY reader at the turnstile or on the bus.
🔄 How can I transfer my MetroCard balance to OMNY?
- Visit an MTA Customer Service Center: Transfer your remaining full-fare or Reduced-Fare MetroCard balance to a new OMNY card—or to your Reduced-Fare OMNY account—at any permanent Customer Service Center in select subway stations.
- Use a Mobile Sales Vehicle: MTA mobile sales vans and buses travel across all five boroughs and Westchester. They can transfer your MetroCard balance to a new OMNY card, sell or refill OMNY cards, and assist with Reduced-Fare applications.
Note: While MetroCard sales end on December 31, 2025, both Customer Service Centers and mobile sales vehicles will continue supporting OMNY transitions into 2026.
💻 Can I reload my OMNY Card online?
Yes, If you register your OMNY card for a free OMNY account, you can reload your card online and even set up automatic reloads.

If there’s one thing that can be said about New Yorkers, it’s that they always have places to be. These transitions are designed to make riding even more convenient, so you can tap, go, and get where you’re headed without missing a beat.
