It’s time to bid the MetroCard adieu, but not without a farewell first.
Now that the city is moving full-speed ahead with OMNY at the start of the new year, it’s easing commuters out of the fare system with a party of sorts — and you’re on the guest list.
As we inch closer to the end of the year, the MTA promises “experiences” and “surprises” dedicated to the little yellow card that’s been in our wallets for so long. We’ll give you the scoop.
The MTA is partnering with NYC spots to pay tribute to the MetroCard
Some of NYC’s most iconic businesses are celebrating the end of an era. Check out a few tributes to the MetroCard (among others):
- Alidoro: The Italian sandwich shop is creating your a limited-time lunchtime favorite dedicated to the MetroCard: La Tessera sandwich (“the card” in Italian): crispy chicken cutlet, sweet soppressata, fresh mozzarella, Calabrian chili vodka sauce and garlic pesto cream on a toasted semolina baguette. It will be available beginning Nov. 3rd in all locations, minus 105 Sullivan St.
- Zabar’s: Everyone’s go-to Upper West Side institution is now selling MetroCard and Cardvaark cookies
- Gong cha: The M Tea A drink, akin to the signature Milk Foam Green Tea, is a combination of green tea, pearls, blue milk foam made with butterfly pea flower, and a chocolate powder MTA logo
Plus, in true NYC fashion, there will be photo opps throughout the rest of the year, but details are still mum. One of our favorite NYC museums, the New York Transit Museum, will honor the MetroCard with a new exhibit and cool merch. (More TK on that front.)
(Psst: If you’re partial to the MTA’s old-school ways, there’s some good news. The MetroCard will still be accepted into 2026, but its final acceptance day is still TBD. Stay tuned for updates.)
