OMNY transit cards are all the talk right now, especially since they’re about to replace MetroCards by the end of 2025.
If you haven’t purchased your OMNY card yet there’s still time, but a brand new development is going to make it even easier to manage one.
New Yorkers will soon be able to add their physical OMNY cards directly to Apple Wallet on iPhone.
The MTA announced earlier this week that they’re planning to launch mobile virtual OMNY cards later this year, which will allow commuters and students to manage and use their transit cards on iPhone and Apple Watch without carrying a physical card.

When will OMNY cards roll out to Apple Wallet?
According to MTA’s latest capital program update, New Yorkers can expect to see virtual OMNY cards become available by December 2025.
The rollout includes both everyday commuters and student riders, letting users not only add OMNY cards to Apple Wallet but also check balances and reload right from the updated MTA app.
The introduction of OMNY cards for iPhone is in theory, meant to align with the same end-of-year timeline of MetroCards vanishing.
OMNY’s compatibility with Apple Wallet is set to join a list of digital transit card systems from across the U.S. that includes San Francisco’s Clipper card, Washington DC’s SmarTrip card, and Los Angeles’ TAP card.
