With OMNY in full swing now and MetroCards getting phased out by the end of 2025, all New Yorkers are currently navigating the transition as best as they can!
Whether it’s switching over to the physical OMNY card, utilizing the tap-to-go contactless payment system, or even a reduced-fare OMNY card, there’s plenty of options to act on now.
But did you know that students in NYC can access special OMNY benefits too?
We break down the process and how NYC students can take advantage of this huge perk.
What exactly are Student OMNY cards?
Student OMNY cards are special transportation cards that are only accessible to select students in New York City.
The physical cards are green (traditional OMNY cards are black), and are available to students to use all-year-long, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
These cards are good for four free rides each day, any time of the day, making it easier and more affordable for eligible students to get to and from school and after-school activities via public transportation.
Each student is eligible for their own individual Student OMNY card, and should not be sharing them with other classmates or non-students. To use the card, simply tap the card on the OMNY readers at any given subway or bus scanner.
These new OMNY cards (which were just introduced in July 2024 ahead of the school year), are a significant improvement for student transportation.
Students were previously limited to only three free rides each day from only 5:30 am – 8:30 pm, and the cards could only be used on days when the student’s school was open for class.
“I’m thrilled about the launch of student OMNY cards because expanding access to public transit means more and more students will have opportunities to explore our city and experience all that New York has to offer,” said New York City Public Schools Chancellor Banks back in July.
What students are eligible for Student OMNY cards
Now you may be wondering, who is eligible for Student OMNY cards? Here’s your answer.
New York City public school students in grades K-12 who live more than half a mile from their school are eligible for a free Student OMNY Card, which allows them to ride MTA subways and buses for free.
That means that any students at a private school in NYC, students that are assigned a yellow bus service, and college students in NYC (including CUNY) are all ineligible.
How to get a Student OMNY card
Student OMNY cards are distributed at and by NYC public schools (not by the MTA). Ask your specific school how a student can get a card.
NYC Public Schools works with schools to distribute the cards, and its usually done in the beginning of the school year.
Troubleshooting a Student OMNY card
Student OMNY cards often get lost, since they are being handled by younger kids most of the time. If you lose or have your card stolen, let your school know right away. They’ll deactivate your old card and get you a replacement.
If your card isn’t working when you tap it, ask a station agent or bus operator for help. If an OMNY card still doesn’t work, return it to your school for a replacement.
