If you’re wondering which eateries in your neighborhood are actually open for outdoor dining, this handy dandy map will do just the trick.
The NYC DOT (Department of Transportation) created a very detailed, interactive map, which can be seen here, that will help you figure out where to head out to dinner outdoors.
First, it includes all NYC restaurants currently open for outdoor dining (the number is 6,955 right now!). Then, it specifies which are serving alcohol, and which have sidewalk or roadway seating (or both). Restaurants can also apply to be added to the list.
You can search by borough, zip code, and restaurant name. By their borough breakdown, Manhattan has the most at 3,400, Brooklyn comes in second at 1,700, and the lowest number is Staten Island at 121.
It’s all part of a larger initiative, called “Open Restaurants,” to make outdoor dining service easier for NYC restaurants. The city and DOT works with restaurants to allow them to use sidewalks, parking spots, plazas and more for expanded seating. And in July, that will expand even further to streets themselves, which will be closed down to traffic. Some of the first open streets in the program will open to restaurants as soon as 4th of July weekend (between 10 and 20 to start).
Still, the hours for dining in the open streets specifically are only on weekends.
