The city’s summer water activities have officially commenced. Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse will bring their kayaks out for visitors to enjoy the simple pleasure of kayaking, for free, with breathtaking views of the skyline. Weather permitting, the boathouse will offer free sessions from Pier 2 on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays starting June 1st through the end of September.
You don’t need any prior kayaking experience to take one out for a spin on the water, but they do recommend wearing water-friendly clothes as your feet and seat may get a bit wet. There will also be a safety boater on the water if you need any assistance (they’ll be in a red vest).
Advanced registration is required for all sessions and opens in two weeks. Though masks are no longer required, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy encourages that masks be worn in congested areas and to maintain social distancing when possible. You can read all about it here.
Due to how busy it gets, kayakers will only get 20 minutes on the water per sessions and wait times can get long so be sure to arrive early! If you’re looking to paddle with a child, there are special family hours on Sundays.
Session hours this year are as follows:
- Wednesday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Thursday 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Saturday 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Sunday 12 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Starting June 5th/family sessions just for kids)
