Booking flights is the easy part — getting to the airport, well…not so much.
With accessibility and infrastructure in mind, New York Governor Kathy Hochul just announced a new $150 million project that will connect the Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) Ronkonkoma Station with MacArthur Airport, most likely via its North Terminal.
“By improving transit access, redesigning road networks, and enhancing critical infrastructure, we are unlocking new opportunities for businesses, tourism, and economic development,” the governor said in a statement. “This $150 million investment will also create good-paying union jobs while transforming how Long Islanders connect to one another, to New York, and to the rest of the world.”
Hopping in a shuttle to LaGuardia or venturing on the Airtrain to JFK is a go-to for most people in NYC, but having additional train access to another airport — crucial for car-less urbanites with large luggage — is a game-changer — and a possible way to avoid a cab fare. Like heading to Newark Liberty International Airport, traveling to MacArthur can be accessible by train for those leaving the city.
Part of Governor Hochul’s attempts to improve MacArthur’s North Terminal, something she’d promised several years ago, this undertaking will see a pedestrian walkway linking the airport and LIRR station, redesigned road networks, and upgrades to various infrastructure.
It’ll be some time before the project gets underway, and we’ll keep you updated as news comes in. In the meantime, check out how to maximize your PTO in 2025 to make the most out of your OOO days, whether or not you’re planning to hop aboard a plane.
