There’s no crying in baseball, and apparently, there’s no shortage of movie stars at Citi Field either.
Tom Hanks has reportedly spent this week filming his new baseball movie, “The Comebacker,” at the Mets’ home ballpark in Queens.
“Tom Hanks has been filming a movie at Citi Field this week called The Comebacker,” Jake Brown posted on X, adding that Hanks plays a Mets pitching coach.
Fake Phillies in Flushing
Here’s the part that’ll make Mets fans laugh (or wince): the movie’s on-field opponents are apparently a fake Phillies squad.
Photos shared on Facebook by a Citi Field staffer show actors in Phillies road grays, complete with made-up names like “Lockhart” on the back, crowding the visitors’ dugout, captioned, “At least I get to guard the fake Phillies lol.”
The photos quickly made the rounds on X after Destiny Lugardo, site director of the fan site Phillies Nation, reposted them, noting there “will be fake Phillies team in the Tom Hanks movie.”
What ‘The Comebacker’ is about
The Sony drama is based on a short story by Dave Eggers and follows a pitcher whose life is upended after he’s hit in the head by a line drive on the mound.
Hanks plays the team’s pitching coach, and the film is written and directed by Marielle Heller, who previously directed him as Mister Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”
The cast is stacked, too:
- Callum Turner as the pitcher
- Patricia Clarkson as the coach’s wife
- Sterling K. Brown as the team manager
- Amy Madigan as the team owner
- Rauw Alejandro in a supporting role
Filming kicked off in New York City on October 1, and the movie is set to hit theaters on July 30, 2027.
Yes, that Callum Turner
Hanks’ co-star might be the most talked-about actor in Hollywood right now.
The “Masters of the Air” star, who’s engaged to Dua Lipa, has been the subject of nonstop rumors that he’s in the running to become the next James Bond, Newsweek reports.
Even former 007 Pierce Brosnan has weighed in, calling Turner “so strong.”
With production still rolling around the city, keep your eyes peeled. You might just walk past a future Bond.
Back in the dugout, 34 years later
This isn’t Hanks’ first time in a baseball uniform.
In 1992, he played washed-up manager Jimmy Dugan in “A League of Their Own,” delivering one of the most quoted lines in movie history: “There’s no crying in baseball!”
Thirty-four years later, he’s back on the field, this time in Queens.
The Mets’ season may be over, but Citi Field is clearly still seeing some action.
