Though more affordable grocery stores like Lidl and Trader Joe’s have their cult following, there’s a recent surge in trendy, boutique grocery stores that have become more and more popular—most notably, the infamous Erewhon.
Erewhon is an LA-born supermarket known for its outrageous prices, like $20 raw milk and $40 hot sauce. Yet because it’s gotten a lot of attention, New Yorkers have been patiently waiting years for one to open up on the East Coast. And though there’s still no actual Erewhon, NYC now has a pretty close dupe to the upscale grocery store, better known as Happier Grocery.

Located in Lower Manhattan on Canal Street near West Broadway, Happier Grocery prides itself on its sustainability, ethical sourcing, and quality. Their products are at least always 70% organic and selected with care. The caveat? Its items can come at some pretty steep prices.
So what can you really expect when walking into an upscale grocery store like Happier Grocery? The space is complete with a seemingly endless drink fridge (there’s two in fact!), fresh sushi rolls, homemade pizzas, a juice bar and more. However, people on social media have made their complaints about Happier Grocery’s inferior hot bar to Erewhon’s.
Moreover, Happier Grocery takes over two entire levels. Plus, there’s even Happier Grocery merchandise inside a refrigerator!

But the real question we’re all wondering is how much do the grocery items cost? Well, for starters they supposedly sell a $45/lb tuna salad, $23 mushrooms, and when we went for a visit, $20 butter! Of course there are items averagely priced, but with $20 butter you can’t say you aren’t curious if it tastes any different.
Happier Grocery is open daily and even available for nationwide shipping on their website.
