UPDATE: The majority of flights have been cancelled at JFK, all flights at LaGuardia have been cancelled, and all flights have been canceled at Newark as of Sunday at 3pm ET.
One of NYC’s largest blizzards in years is barreling towards us, and travelers are — rightfully so — curious about impending flight cancellations this weekend.
Considering we’re bracing for quite a large accumulation of snow in Gotham and preparing for temperatures to drop down to the teens, per the AccuWeather forecast, you’ll want to make sure you’re as prepared as possible — which means heading home.
Should you be in the midst of a winter getaway or have friends from out of town who are looking to make an exit, it’s time to start planning. Here’s what travelers need to know about the impending conditions and the status of their flights.
Flight cancellations this weekend
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, airport staff, snow removal equipment, and centralized emergency operations centers are all in place ahead of the blizzard to support those who are headed to LaGuardia, JFK, or Newark throughout the next few days. Processes are in place for flight cancellations, depending on the severity of the conditions, and decisions are made at least 24 hours prior to the storm.
Before leaving for the airport, Port Authority insists you check the status of your flight via the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website. Additionally, you should check in with your airline for further updates.
“Our priority during winter storms is straightforward — keeping passengers safe, informed, and moving while restoring normal operations as quickly as conditions allow,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton.
What’s happening so far
Per PBS, FlightAware has reported roughly 13,000 flight cancellations across the country between Saturday and Sunday. Carriers waived change and cancellation fees for airports from New Mexico to New York, per CNBC.
