Just 90 minutes north of New York City, you will find the stunning Pollepel Island. It is home to the majestic, crumbling ruins of Bannerman Castle.
You might think you have been transported to the Scottish Highlands. However, this surreal destination is just a short trip away near Beacon, NY.
As the air turns crisp, there is no better time to explore these legendary ruins. But you have to act fast. Public access is seasonal and officially ends in October.
The history behind the ruins
The towering structure wasn’t built for royalty. It was constructed by Francis Bannerman VI. He was a Scottish immigrant who ran a massive military surplus business.
His NYC storeroom was completely overflowing. In 1900, he purchased Pollepel Island to build a secure storage facility.
By 1901, he built the gorgeous castle for him and his wife to reside in. The architecture famously mimics his home country. He even used old cannon barrels and military hardware as decorative elements.
Tragedy struck the Bannerman family multiple times, leaving the property to decay. A major explosion in 1920 destroyed a portion of the complex. Later, a devastating fire in 1969 completely destroyed the main arsenal building.

Set sail for Bannerman Island
You cannot just drive up to this abandoned landmark. Access to the island is exclusively managed through official guided tours for safety and preservation.
Your autumn journey begins aboard the Estuary Steward tour boat. It departs from the Beacon waterfront dock right across from the Metro-North Train Station.
The boat accommodates 44 passengers per tour. You get a highly scenic 30-minute ride across the Hudson Highlands.
Once you arrive, you can enjoy a guided 1.5-hour walking tour of the famous ruins and the changing seasonal gardens.
For the more adventurous New Yorkers, you can even do your own tour by kayak or canoe. You must bring your own boat, but a historian will be on the island to give you an exclusive tour.

Final events of the 2026 season
The Bannerman Castle Trust works tirelessly to preserve the structures. To raise funds, they host incredible events on the island.
Since October is the final month of the season, this is your absolute last chance to experience the island’s unique programming before winter. You can catch a sunset outdoor screening of Gremlins on October 2, or enjoy live music on the island stage during the Third Sunday Music Concert Series on October 18.
The cool autumn breeze and the dramatic stone ruins make this the ultimate fall day trip from the city.
