Sitting along the majestic Hudson River—just north of the river’s deepest point known as “World’s End”—this picturesque town of roughly 2,000 residents offers sweeping water views and dramatic fall colors.
Known for its remarkably well-preserved 19th-century architecture, Cold Spring caters to all things hiking, shopping, and eating.
The walkable waterfront village floods with locals and Manhattan day-trippers every autumn, delivering all the quintessential fall feels. It genuinely feels like stepping right onto a movie set.
What to know and how to get there
Before you lock in your weekend plans, there are a few local quirks to keep in mind. Do not expect to hail a ride. There are virtually no taxis or Ubers used in the area, so plan to walk everywhere once you arrive.
Additionally, beyond the incredible hiking trails, there is not much to do outside of the main downtown radius. Because your itinerary and the train station are entirely outdoors, weather is a major factor when planning your trip.
You do not need a car to get your small-town fix. The easiest way to arrive is via the Metro-North Railroad’s Hudson Line.
Catch the train at Grand Central Terminal for a scenic journey that takes just over an hour. If you travel on the weekend, it is an off-peak ride costing about $30 round trip.
Pro tip: Keep the water on the west (left) side when leaving Manhattan. You will ride directly along the Hudson River, and the fall foliage views from the window are incredible.
When you step off the train, you have two scenic routes. Take a right on Market Street and follow it straight for a five-minute walk to the waterfront.
Alternatively, when the road splits, take Lunn Terrace for an eight-minute stroll that lands you right in the middle of downtown.

Experiencing the fall colors
Cold Spring places outdoor enthusiasts right near incredible trails without ever needing to worry about traffic.
- Mild hike: Head to Little Stony Point. You can walk directly from the main street to the trail entrance for an easy, scenic loop by the water.
- Full-on hike: Tackle the epic trails at Mount Taurus (Bull Hill) or Breakneck Ridge. You can actually take the train one stop past Cold Spring if you strictly plan to hike Breakneck. Note: The popular Breakneck Ridge trailheads are currently closed for safety improvements until mid-2027, but the surrounding Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve offers plenty of open, alternative routes!)
