With its soaring vaulted ceilings, Gothic Revival arches and remarkable 19th-century stained glass, St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church is one of those Brooklyn buildings that rewards looking up. The historic church has stood on Montague Street since the 1840s, and this weekend, thousands of candles will illuminate its beautiful nave for a particularly nostalgic and atmospheric concert.
On Saturday, September 26, Candlelight: The Lord of the Rings will bring the epic scores that gave sound to Middle-earth to this striking structure in Brooklyn Heights. Featuring the skilled musicians of Highline String Quartet, you’ll hear Howard Shore’s evocative film music from The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King reimagined.

A 179-year-old Brooklyn landmark welcomes music from ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films
Opened in 1847 at the highest point in Brooklyn Heights, this Minard Lafever–designed Episcopal church exemplifies Gothic Revival architecture with its brownstone exterior, vaulted ceilings, and detailed stonework. Still, its most notable feature is an extraordinary collection of 54 surviving stained-glass windows created by William Jay Bolton in 1845. These hold the distinction of being the very first manufactured figural stained-glass windows in America.
This week, you can see the beautiful stained glass through the flicker of thousands of candles as Candlelight and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Experiences bring a captivating tribute to The Lord of the Rings films, revisiting music from some of the most pivotal moments of the franchise, including “Concerning Hobbits”, “The Riders of Rohan” and “Minas Tirith”. The 60-minute program will be performed by Highline String Quartet, with the violin, viola and cello carrying the story beneath St Ann’s high vaulted ceiling.
