Patchogue, NY was not always the South Shore destination it is today.
In 1996, The New York Times described the village’s downtown as “dilapidated”, with boarded-up windows and fire damage visible from the street. Fast-forward a few decades and it has become one of Long Island’s clearest comeback stories: a walkable waterfront village full of restaurants, bars, venues, and a revitalized downtown that the American Planning Association has since named one of its Great Neighborhoods.
This November, Patchogue is adding another very good reason to make the trip east.
The Jazz Room: A Journey to the Heart of New Orleans is taking over Stereo Garden, a 1940s roller rink turned vast event space, for a night of brass, blues, ragtime, and the kind of loose, joyful jazz that makes sitting still feel like an unreasonable request.

Stereo Garden
For one night, an old skating floor is trading wheels for When The Saints Go Marching In, and Patchogue is going to sound a little more like Bourbon Street.
We have all the exclusive details about the LI trip you didn’t know you needed.
Inside the former roller rink
Stereo Garden is not your standard Long Island concert room.
The building was originally constructed as the Patchogue Roller Rink in the 1940s, a history that still actually shapes the room today.
It has more than 20,000 square feet of column-free floor space, exposed wood rafters, and a high, curved ceiling that feels made for a full-volume brass section.
It is a proper transformation. The floor where skaters once looped around beneath rink lights will become a dimly lit jazz setting, with shared tables, drinks in hand, and a live band bringing New Orleans standards to life in a venue built for communal energy.
Stereo Garden can accommodate up to 900 people, yet The Jazz Room is structured around an intimate, cabaret-style experience. That means guests are seated at shared tables, and seating within each ticketed zone is first-come, first-served, so arriving early is your best chance of getting close to the band.
Why Patchogue fits the assignment
Patchogue’s turnaround was not an accident.
The village invested in its Main Street, restored and repurposed older buildings, expanded housing near the LIRR station, and made its downtown easier to explore on foot.
The result is a place that feels far more like a proper night-out destination than a stop you simply pass through on the way elsewhere.
The American Planning Association’s recognition of Downtown Patchogue specifically highlighted that long-term revitalization, describing the village as a successful model for walkability, redevelopment, and transit-oriented growth.
That makes Stereo Garden a particularly good fit for the night.
The venue is a small-scale version of Patchogue itself: an old local landmark with a new life, now filling its cavernous former rink space with the sound of another city entirely.
What The Jazz Room will sound like
The Jazz Room is built around the music that spilled out of New Orleans clubs in the early twentieth century: hot jazz, ragtime, blues, swinging brass, and room for the musicians to improvise rather than simply play the hits exactly as written.
Expect a live band performing familiar standards, including:
- When The Saints Go Marching In
- Hello, Dolly!
- St. James Infirmary
- Basin Street Blues
- On The Sunny Side Of The Street
The show runs for around 60 minutes, with a lively performance format rather than a buttoned-up recital.
The brass will rise into the high ceiling, the rhythm will do what it does best, and the room should feel a long way from a former Long Island roller rink by the time the final notes land!
The event is scheduled to land on Long Island on November 8th (with an additional evening planned January 15, 2027), and tickets start at only $36 right now.
