You know, there’s a difference between like and love: We like hearing about new Broadway shows, but we love knowing a 10 Things I Hate About You musical is on its way, even there isn’t an opening date in sight quite yet.
The iconic ’90s rom-com, starring Heath Ledger as bad-boy Patrick Verona and Julia Stiles as the outspoken Sarah Lawrence hopeful Kat Straford, might be based on Shakespeare’s renowned 1594 play, The Taming of the Shrew, but we’d argue this retelling is more beloved than the original. (Don’t tell our English lit professors.) Now, the cult classic is being reimagined for the stage, and we are not underwhelmed, or simply “whelmed”, we are overwhelmed with excitement.
A star-studded lineup is on tap for the creation of this Broadway project: Carly Rae Jepsen will co-write the score with singer, writer, and producer Ethan Gruska, and and Lena Dunham will co-write the book alongside playwright Jessica Huang.
Not much has been revealed about the actors who will take on these beloved roles — any guesses, Broadway buffs? — but we can only hope we have yet another feminist headstrong Kat and oh-s0-dreamy Patrick. And we can’t even begin to imagine the stunning “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” performance that awaits, though we’ll admit, Heath is a tough act to follow. (Who do you want to hear belt out the iconic song?)
Details are still mum and a release date is still to be determined, but rest assured, we’re totally ready to venture to Padua High School for this amazing play-turned-movie-turned-play once again. We are, in fact, that transparent: we want you, we need you, oh baby, oh baby.
While we wait for more news to drop, be sure to explore the tickets for Broadway shows that are currently showing. There’s plenty to choose from! (Nick Jonas is starring in The Last Five Years while Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal are taking on a futuristic Shakespeare rendition of their own with Othello. (It’s a pricey one, but there are $49 student tickets available.)
