However, thanks to a rare alignment in the 2026 calendar, NYC workers can officially “hack” the system.
With a little strategic planning, you can stretch just nine PTO days into a glorious 17-day summer vacation–aka the ultimate “mega break” hack. No, this isn’t a drill! For once, your paid time off won’t vanish faster than your vacation cocktail!
The Summer 2026 “Mega-Break” Formula
The secret lies in the 14-day gap between Juneteenth and Independence Day.
In 2026, Juneteenth (June 19) falls on a Friday. Just two weeks later, the Fourth of July falls on a Saturday, meaning the federal holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. By “bridging” the gap between these two long weekends, you create a massive block of time off for a fraction of the cost to your PTO balance.
The Strategy:
Request these 9 days off:
- June 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 (5 days)
- June 29, 30 & July 1, 2 (4 days)
The Result:
Because you’re bookending these requests with Friday, June 19 (a holiday) and Friday, July 3 (an observed holiday) plus the surrounding weekends, you will be out of the office from Friday morning, June 19, until Monday morning, July 6.
That’s 17 consecutive days of freedom for the price of nine!
Where to spend your 17-day escape
With over two weeks of freedom, you can finally ditch the staycation and actually leave the continent. Even more, this will happen right around the time NYC becomes a literal sauna. Here’s where we’re eyeing:
- Rio de Janeiro: Take advantage of the new direct flights launching this July
- The Azores, Portugal: Often called the “Hawaii of Europe,” this hidden tropical oasis is only a 5-hour flight from JFK and features world-class thermal springs
- Japan: 17 days is the perfect amount of time to trek from the neon lights of Tokyo to the ancient temples of Kyoto
Prefer to stay in the States?
- Olympic National Park, WA: This 2,000-year-old “ancient forest,” was recently named a top wellness destination
- Glacier National Park, MT: The “alpine jewel” of the Rockies, perfect for escaping the city heat
