Before we get to the barbecues and sparklers, more than 18.5 million passengers are projected to travel by air this Fourth of July holiday. Sunday, July 6th alone is expected to see approximately 2.9 million passengers in a single day. TSA reports that they’re prepared to screen this many passengers, nearing the agency’s busiest single day on record, when they screened nearly 3.1 million passengers on Sunday, June 22nd.
TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill said:
TSA continues to work closely with our industry partners and ensure our airport security checkpoints are fully staffed and prepared to handle the heavy rush of traffic…We are deploying technologies and procedures to improve security and enhance the passenger experience, including for families. We ask travelers to pack their patience, especially during peak travel days, as we work to provide maximum hospitality to our customers.
The more than 18.5 million fliers accounts for the passenger volume estimated between Tuesday, July 1st through Monday, July 7th. TSA urges travelers to have their REAL ID, or REAL ID-compliant document (no, your Costco card does not suffice) at the ready.

Not looking forward to waiting in long queues? Passengers can expedite their screening process by signing up for TSA PreCheck. Data shows that 99% of travelers with TSA PreCheck get through security in under 10 minutes—making it a much faster alternative to standard screening. And if you’re traveling with children, fear not—they can join you through TSA PreCheck if they’re under 12 years old.
Don’t forget that TSA has a number (275-872) that travelers can text for any answers they may need while passing through a security checkpoint.

Moreover, be sure you’re clear on what items you can and cannot travel with. Although we love a good Fourth of July fireworks show, people are prohibited to travel with fireworks in both their carry-on luggage and checked bags. You can explore which items are permitted to pack with TSA’s handy search bar function.
