The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is strongly urging everyone to act fast and get their REAL ID before the deadline arrives. But for some, understanding whether you have a REAL ID or a REAL ID-compliant form of identification can be confusing. Moreover, if you don’t have one, it’s important to understand how you can score an appointment for one.
What is a REAL ID and why do I need it?
A REAL ID is a DMV-issued, federally compliant ID card (driver’s license, learner’s permit, non-driver ID) that will be needed in order to board any domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities starting May 7th, 2025. The REAL ID Act ensures a federal security standard for state-issued IDs.
This is different from an Enhanced ID, that’s REAL ID-compliant but also works for crossing the U.S. border from Mexico, Canada and some Caribbean countries (something the REAL ID does not permit). Learn more about the differences between a REAL ID and an Enhanced ID with our guide.
How do I know if I have a REAL ID?
You can determine whether you have a REAL ID or compliant card by the star marking in the upper portion of the card. New York’s REAL ID is noted by a black circle with a hollow star in the upper right corner.
You can view more examples on the NYSDMV website.
