Even if you’re not an international jet-setter, but a domestic traveler, you’ll need to ensure you obtain a REAL ID or REAL ID-compliant document in order to board any domestic flight before May arrives. This is a mandate under the REAL ID Act to establish minimum security standards for state-issued IDs, permits, and driver’s licenses.
“Whether you are planning to fly soon or not, the REAL ID deadline is almost here, and we want all New Yorkers to be prepared,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “The last thing you want to do is delay a trip, or worse, be unable to fly if you need to in a pinch because you don’t have the right identification. So don’t delay in making your REAL ID appointment, and before you come see us, check out our online resources so you can be sure you have everything you need.”

When REAL ID will go into effect
Federal rules will require all travelers to have a REAL ID in order to board any domestic flight and enter secure federal facilities by May 7th, 2025.
REAL ID enforcement
REAL ID enforcement will begin that same day on May 7th, 2025. Passengers without a REAL ID or compliant card will not be permitted through the security checkpoint.
REAL ID-compliant documents
REAL ID-compliant documents that are acceptable in lieu of a REAL ID include:
- Passport (if you’re traveling internationally, a REAL ID won’t be accepted. You will still need a valid passport)
- Enhanced Driver’s License (only if issued from Vermont, Washington, Michigan, Minnesota or New York)
You can find other REAL ID-compliant documents on TSA’s website.
Typically, REAL ID-compliant cards are marked by a star in the upper region of the identification card.

States that require a REAL ID
All 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five territories are REAL ID compliant. All will issue REAL IDs and REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs.
Travelers are advised to get a REAL ID even if their current ID isn’t expiring soon. Of course, no states require residents have a REAL ID, it’s just necessary if you intend to travel by airplane.
Where to get a REAL ID in NYC
Select DMVs in NYC and on Long Island will offer specific REAL ID appointment hours on Saturday mornings between April and June. Find a DMV location near you.

REAL ID cost
Getting a REAL ID costs no extra than a regular renewal. However, an Enhanced Driver’s License is an additional $30. This is because it grants Americans entry when returning to the United States from Mexico, Canada, and some Caribbean countries.
