Though trying to separate tourists from the locals sounds expectedly easy, we thought we’d compile a list of major indicators anyway. So we asked our followers their telltale signs to pick out fellow New Yorkers from a crowd and these were their answers…
1. They’re always in a rush.
2. The accent. Think you can disiguse it—fuggetaboutit!
3. Immune to noise. We fall asleep to sirens.
4. They mind their business.
5. The attitude.
6. Confidence. Gotta be to make it.
7. Walking around like they know where they’re going, even if they don’t.
8. Always stands on the right side of the subway escalators, unless they choose to walk on the left.
9. They tell you. We’re very proud people.
10. Always stop for cawfee in the morning from the bodega.
11. Straight to the point when they talk to you.
12. Unfazed by anything crazy going on in the surrounding area.
13. Dressed in all black.
14. You never catch them in Times Square.
15. New York is their whole personality.
16. Gets upset when a transplant says they’re a New Yorker, even if they’ve lived in NYC 10+ years. They only consider true New Yorkers to be born here.
17. Carves out a perfect route through a crowd.
18. Constantly says “yerrrr,” “deadass,” or “brick.”
19. They stand two feet into the street when the crosswalk still hasn’t changed.
20. Never makes eye-contact when on the subway.
