For the second year in a row the one and only hotel at JFK airport, TWA Hotel, is transforming its tarmac into a ‘Roll-A-Rama’ at the Runway Rink, and it’ll be open starting April 15th!
The innovative hotel is bringing the era of roller skating back to New York with its 44-by-56-foot outdoor rink that will blast energetic retro tunes. The TWA Shop can even help you dress for the occasion, selling TWA gear such as striped tube socks and tracksuits.
New York has played a major role in the history of roller skating, according to Nellie Anderson Lillie of the National Museum of Roller Skating, and was actually home to one of the first public rinks to open in the U.S. by James Plimpton.
Visitors will be able to skate on the 2,668-tile roller rink around the hotel’s iconic Lockheed Constellation Connie airplane that has since been remodeled into a cocktail lounge.
Admission will operate on a first come first serve basis and tickets will not be available to purchase ahead of time. Visitors must pay with card only upon arrival at the Skate Shack for a 50-minute session with skate rental included. Tickets are $20 for adults and $16 for children under 12.
Skaters are welcome (weather permitting) on weekends starting Fridays from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. A limited quantity of helmets will be available for rent and you’re encouraged to bring your own.
The rink will follow strict cleaning protocols in between sessions to ensure a safe experience for all visitors.
The rink will remain open until November 2022—but why wait? Grab your skates and head on down. And after a long day of skating, guests can extend the fun and stay overnight to explore many more amenities the hotel has to offer.
