While we will fight anyone who says NYC doesn’t have the best pizza in the world (we’re looking specifically at you Connecticut), sometimes you have to leave the city to pay your respects to a slice of history…literally.
Located just about 40 minutes north of Grand Central in New Rochelle, Pizzeria La Rosa has been making serious waves lately.
Not only has it become a Westchester staple, but it was recently cemented as a national destination after being named one of the best pizzerias in the entire country according to USA Today.
It officially joins the ranks of other local legends like L’Industrie, which was also recently named the #1 slice in the U.S. earlier this year by a different outlet.
The secret? A 100-year-old oven
The “X” factor here is the history and Pizzeria La Rosa isn’t just “inspired” by the old school; it’s quite literally built on it.
The restaurant houses a massive 100-year-old Petersen oven that dates back to 1924 and is the key secret to what makes it so damn good.
Originally part of a long-standing bakery, the oven was meticulously restored to its former glory.
Today, it churns out thin-crust masterpieces that bridge the gap between a classic NY slice and a charred, artisanal Neapolitan pie (similar to the world-renowned Una Pizza Napoletana).
What to order
The menu here is a “less is more” situation, focusing on high-quality ingredients and that signature smoky char. Here are some options that just can’t go wrong:
- The Margherita: A masterclass in balance with fresh mozzarella and basil.
- The “Rosa” Pie: A fan favorite featuring red onion, rosemary, and Parmigiano Reggiano.
- The Meatballs: Locals swear these are some of the best in the tri-state area.
How to get there
Want to experience some of the magic yourself? Well, you don’t even need a car to get there.
- Train: Take the Metro-North (New Haven Line) from Grand Central to New Rochelle. It’s only about a 35-40 minute ride and then a quick 10-minute walk from there.
- Pro Tip: Make sure to take advantage of the new MTA Day Pass for unlimited Metro-North travel to save some cash on your trip.
