You read that right. Governor’s Island is making ice skating in NYC a year round possibility.
The Trust for Governors Island recently announced that a skating rink will open up for the summertime on Governors Island’s Western shore. Mel’s Rink Governors Island, as it is called, will open this Memorial Day weekend, May 26.
The 8,000-square-foot arena is made from a synthetic material thats designed for metal skates. It’ll be the first outdoor skating activity for the island, and a unique experience for all visitors to skate on “ice” during the warm summer months.
Enjoy beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty as you skate! The rink will remain open through Oct. 31 with free weekday sessions from 10 a.m. until noon, and then $20 until 5 p.m. after on weekdays or 6 p.m. on weekends.
