New Yorkers have one more reason to look up at the night sky this week! October’s full moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, has arrived just days before Halloween, bringing a bright lunar display to the skies above the five boroughs.
The full moon reached peak illumination at 12:11 a.m. on Monday, October 26, but it will continue to appear nearly full and bright in the night sky. Here’s when to look up and the story behind this seasonal celestial event.
When can you see the Hunter’s Moon in NYC?
The October full moon reached its peak in the early hours of Monday, October 26. However, you haven’t necessarily missed your chance to see it!
The moon will continue to look nearly full in the evenings surrounding its peak, making tonight another opportunity to catch a glimpse.
For the best viewing experience, head outside around dusk and look toward the eastern horizon as the moon rises. Find a spot with a clear view of the sky, away from tall buildings that could obstruct your view.
As always, visibility will depend on local weather conditions and cloud cover.
Why is October’s full moon called the Hunter’s Moon?
The Hunter’s Moon gets its name from traditional seasonal practices associated with preparing for winter.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, after the autumn harvest, cleared fields made it easier for hunters to spot animals preparing for the colder months ahead. The full moon’s bright light also provided additional visibility after sunset.
The name follows September’s Harvest Moon, which marked the traditional harvest season. This year, the Harvest Moon appeared on September 26.
When is the next full moon in 2026?
Missed October’s lunar display? There’s another opportunity coming up soon.
The next full moon will be November’s Beaver Moon, continuing the calendar of monthly lunar events as the nights grow longer and winter approaches.
Until then, keep an eye on the sky tonight. With Halloween just around the corner, the Hunter’s Moon makes for a fitting seasonal backdrop.
