Hopefully you enjoyed the temperatures during the long holiday weekend because the NYC weather is taking a bit of a turn.
Not only are we in store for 144 hours of cloudy skies this week, but as of July 8th, the city has a heat advisory and a flood warning in effect. We apologize to break the bad news.
If you’re out and about — and potentially traveling home from work during a less-than-ideal scenario — we’ll tell you everything you need to know.
NYC weather: an update on the heat advisory & flood watch
According to the city’s emergency notification system, Notify NYC, we are in a flood effect from 2pm on Tuesday to 2am on Wednesday.
A tweet from the organization states: “Flood Watch for NYC: 2 PM on 7/8-2: AM on 7/9. 2 inches of rain may cause flooding of roadways & streets. Prepare to move to higher ground during periods of heavy rain.”
Per The Weather Channel, the chance of rain hovers at 60% for Tuesday, and thunderstorm watches are in effect for later in the evening.
A statement reads, “Thunderstorms, some locally heavy early, then partly cloudy after midnight. Storms could contain damaging winds.”
New Yorkers who reside in basement apartments should prepare to move to higher grounds if necessary.
In addition to the rain and flood threats, NYC is also very hot.
A heat advisory is in effect currently as temperatures reach the high 90s. We have details on the city’s cooling centers and ways to stay cool in NYC when such an occasion strikes.
Notify NYC also tweeted, “NYC cooling centers open Tuesday, 7/8 due to forecasted high temps and heat indices. Older adults, people with health risks, and those without A/C should plan ahead. Call sites to check hours.”
“We’re asking all New Yorkers to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and head to a cooling center if needed, and don’t forget to check in on older neighbors and family members,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement, per Gothamist.
Stay safe in your travels, NYC. Should you encounter any emergencies, you’re advised to call 9-1-1.
