Just in case you were wondering — or need time to mentally prepare — NYC is due for its snowiest winter in five years. Ready for it?
On Monday, November 10th, we abruptly dropped to our first 30-degree temps in six months, followed by a citywide freeze warning, followed by our first flurries of the season on the morning of November 11th.
Things got cold, and quickly, so we’re not necessarily surprised to hear that we’re due for an influx of flurries. Might want to grab those snow boots out of the closet while you can…
NYC is getting its snowiest winter in five years — what you need to know
The AccuWeather Forecast believes we’re due for anywhere from 17 to 21 inches of snow this season.

However, meteorologist Allan Nosoff suggests we’re actually due for a bit more: anywhere between 25 and 35 inches, which will surpass what we’ve seen in recent years. (For context, the 1995-1996 blizzard generously provided a staggering 75 inches of snow, so 2025-2026 seems like a breeze!)
Nosoff also believes we’re due for a below-average December and January, so if we’re expecting snow, it’ll likely happen then. February, however, will be warmer than usual. (Perhaps the groundhog won’t see his shadow and we can expect an early spring in 2026.)
So, will we actually get the “Chill, snow, repeat” treatment that the Old Farmers Almanac has suggested? Will La Niña make traveling a nightmare? Or, perhaps, might we get a false alarm?! Who knows what Mother Nature is plotting.
One thing is for sure, the cold weather has just begun, so ensure that your black puffer coat is ready to go and make sure your radiators can handle wicked conditions (just in case). Best of luck this winter, friends!
