As the heir to the Iron Throne famously said, “Winter is coming” — and it seems the NYC snow forecast is gearing up for activity.
The coldest January in 13 years will kickstart the fun early on January 6th with Winter Storm Blair, which is dubbed “the most widespread winter storm of the season so far,” according to The Weather Channel. As the predictions indicate, Blair is likely to make her way through the central and eastern U.S. throughout the weekend and into Monday the 6th, when NYC can expect flurries.
While we were pleased to see a White Christmas — the first in NYC since 2009 — Blair has the possibility to bring a bit more intensity. The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center says “An arctic outbreak is forecast to spread from the Northern plains to the south and east, leading to exceptionally high probabilities of below-normal temperatures expected across much of the east.” Wowza!
The 10-day weather forecast says we can expect temperatures in the low to mid 30s during the day from Friday through Sunday, with lows in the evenings of high 20s. On Monday, when we could see flurries, the temperature will be a high of 31°F and a low of 22°F. Between the cold air and high chance for precipitation, it’s likely we could see snow.
While some forecasts insist Monday will only bring cold temperatures, others suggest that the NYC area could experience at least 1-2 inches of snow. Time will tell what Mother Nature has in store for us, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
Should we get a white blanket of snow this weekend, be sure to bookmark the best spots for sledding in NYC and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate afterwards. Stay warm and safe, NYC!
