What does San Gennaro celebrate?
When Italians made their way to the United States from Italy in the 20th century, those from Naples settled along Mulberry Street and decided to celebrate their patron saint annually to keep their culture and traditions alive. That still continues to this day.
Saint Gennaro, the patron Saint of Naples, was martyred for his faith, and Italians pray to him for safety against natural causes like fires, earthquakes, plagues, and so on. The blood of St. Gennaro, which is preserved in two phials, is said to liquefy twice a year: on his feast day and the first Sunday of May.
