We love maps here at Secret NYC as much as the next person, and the city just released a brand new one compiling all of the streets and intersections named after NYC legends.
New Yorkers can now utilize this new interactive, online map that showcases the different stories behind all of the significant streets throughout the city’s history.
The map itself features 2,496 entries (1,610 co-named intersections and 886 co-named streets) where New Yorkers can find by searching by a specific name, ZIP code, or just toggling a region on the map with their fingers!
This project was recently developed by the city’s Department of Records and Information Services and uses software from the Office of Technology and Innovation. It aims to be the “Wikipedia for street names,” says City Councilmember Gale Brewer of Manhattan.
Some of the most notable street names we’ve found include:
- Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace Way
- Stan Lee Way
- Duke Ellington Boulevard
- Jimi Hendrix Way
- Malcolm X Boulevard
