Sure it’s not even Easter (therefore spring has barely begun), yet the sweet excitement for summer has already begun slipping into the minds of New Yorkers as tons of summer travel news is seemingly popping up each week. Most recently, the opening of Amalfi Coast’s brand new commercial airport: Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport.
Though the Italian airport has been around since 1926, operating as a flying school, a carabinieri firefighter and parachuter training facility, and a private airport throughout the years, it hasn’t serviced commercial flights for nearly a decade. Lucky for us, that’s about to change!
EasyJet is offering flights under $300 for trips from NYC to Amalfi once the airport opens this summer—you’ll just have to make a quick stop at London Gatwick on the way. Additional airlines such as Volotea and RyanAir are expected to launch flight routes to and from Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport, according to Afar.
Until now, travelers visiting the Amalfi Coast needed to fly into Napoli-Capodichino Airport, the current closest operational airport to the UNESCO-designated area. That airport is roughly 65.4 km (41 miles) from the town of Amalfi. Whereas Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is only 45.1 km from Amalfi (28 miles).
Design components such as a runway expansion (adding 7,200 feet to the already 6,5000-foot runway) and constructing a new passenger terminal are slated to extend well into next year and even through 2027. In three years, Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is expected to service upwards of 3.3 million passengers.
Overall, the new airport will make traveling to Amalfi Coast much easier, while lightening the crowds at other nearby airports.
