There’s nothing more magical than a white Christmas, but with that potentially out of the cards for NYC this year, some of us have been begging for even the slightest glimpse of flurries (because those five minutes we got a few weeks ago just didn’t cut it!). Well, those that have been sleeping with a spoon under their pillow may just get their wish–and as soon as this weekend!
If you haven’t taken your puffer coat down from the top of your closet yet–and if you haven’t, what are you doing?! we just got hit with record-breaking arctic conditions!!!–you’ll certainly want to now.
That’s because John Feerick, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, is predicting potential flurries in NYC Saturday night into Sunday morning. Feerick stated:
The best chance for some snow across our area would be Saturday night into Sunday morning. Certainly the speed of that storm lends itself to not necessarily being a big storm, per se, but it certainly could end up being the first accumulating snow of the season.
Before you get your hopes up let us clarify that we’re not talking a huge blizzard or anything, so don’t plan any Central Park sledding get togethers or snowball fights.
Rather, it could merely mean the year’s first accumulating snowfall, which means snowfall that stays on the ground, rather than melting immediately upon contact.
As of Thursday afternoon (December 11th), AccuWeather is forecasting a 51% chance of 1 to 3 inches of snow falling in NYC. This opens the possibility of slippery roadways and sidewalks for those traveling and walking around the city–the perfect excuse to take a break from holiday shopping!

With that being said, Feerick is tracking two pieces of energy that, as of now, will likely merge off the coast of the U.S. after having already passed NYC. If these energies merge faster, however, that would mean a stronger storm and more snow in NYC.
Still, AccuWeather’s current forecast for Saturday night (December 13th) is showing temps of 28° and an 84% probability of precipitation. The forecast reads:
Snow and flurries, accumulating a coating to an inch; snow can make streets and sidewalks slippery, causing travel disruptions.

And by Sunday, December 14th, that snow should still be falling. With a high of just 31º, the forecast reads:
Snow in the morning; otherwise, considerable clouds and colder; storm total 1-3″; snow can make streets and sidewalks slippery, causing travel disruptions.

If this snowfall does come to fruition, it would be practically right on time. The Weather Channel predicted back in October NYC would see its first flurries for the season on December 7th of this year.
We all know how unpredictable Mother Nature can be, though. And if we don’t end up seeing snow this weekend, rest assured the time will come–AccuWeather’s 2025-26 Winter forecast calls for anywhere from 17-21″ of snow in NYC this year, compared to last year’s 12.9″.
If you need us, we’ll be cuddled up on our couch with a holiday movie on the TV and a hot mug of mulled wine in our hand.
