On Earth Day today, Mayor de Blasio made a series of announcements to help make NYC more sustainable.
And one of those includes a fleet of entirely electric school buses! They already have one that will begin picking up students next week, but it will take about 14 years (2035) for the entire NYC school bus fleet to go 100% electric. Within two years though, they plan to have at least 75 electric buses.
In general, the city aims to have an 100% electric city fleet by 2040.
They also said they will be increasing the amount of electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city, including a new local law that would require new parking lots to have them.
The city’s popular curbside compost program will also be starting up again in October (it had been cut from last year’s budget), along with a new feature that will let you find nearby composting and recycling options with an app.
