As we move into our second day of heavy snowfall here in New York City, the inches continue to pile up by the hour. As of this morning, the National Weather Service reported that the city had already received more than 19 inches of snow — and totals are still rising.
The city may never sleep, but storms like this demand careful planning. With the plow map now live, many New Yorkers are understandably wondering when it will be safe to travel — or even when it’s the right time to step outside and start shoveling.
❄️ Storm Updates
The blizzard has been battering New York City and parts of the tri-state since Sunday evening, with some communities seeing nearly 24 consecutive hours of snowfall. While many areas have surpassed 12 inches, early totals in several towns have already topped 20 inches — and counting.
According to the National Weather Service, a blizzard warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, covering New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, and coastal and northern New Jersey.
Snow showers are expected to continue through at least 4 p.m., with periods of heavy snowfall and the potential for whiteout conditions. Wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph, further reducing visibility and creating dangerous drifting.
Travel bans are currently in place across New York City, Long Island, and northern New Jersey, as officials urge residents to remain at home and off the roads. Most mass transit systems are paused or operating on limited service, compounding the difficulty of getting around.
Additional impacts are already being felt. Power outages have been reported in parts of Staten Island and Long Island, and extended travel restrictions remain in effect in several New Jersey communities.
Forecasters say conditions should gradually improve later Monday evening as snowfall tapers off and winds begin to ease. However, even after the snow ends, hazardous travel is likely to persist due to deep accumulations, icy roadways, and continued cleanup efforts.
