On Thursday, September 11th, 2025, New Yorkers and Americans around the country will come together to remember the tragedy and lives lost in the 9/11 attacks more than two decades ago.
The annual Tribute in Light will return, with twin beams illuminating the NYC sky from Lower Manhattan. The beams of light, symbolizing resilience and remembrance, will be visible from up to 60 miles away.
Confirmed NYC street closures for 9/11 Ceremony
The following streets will be closed during the 9/11 Ceremony event on Thursday, September 11th, 2025, according to the official NYC DOT advisory.
- Areas bounded by Barclay Street on the North; Rector Street on the South; Broadway on the East; West Street on the West (All Inclusive)
- Liberty Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- Albany Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- West Thames Street between West Street and South End Avenue
- South End Avenue between Liberty Street and West Thames Street
- Battery Place between West Thames Street and 3rd Place
- 3rd Place between Battery Place and Little West Street
- Little West Street between 3rd Place and Battery Place
Special restrictions and an embargo
A Special Event Construction Embargo has been put in place from September 9th, 2025 – September 11th, 2025. This means that there is a temporary suspension of construction work in the affected area. Emergency work may be an exception, so long as prior authorization or an emergency number was secured from the NYC DOT in the embargo zone. Otherwise, routine activities and work are generally prohibited.
In addition to the annual 9/11 Ceremony, a Special Event Construction Embargo is typically issued during other major city events such as the NYC marathon, UN General Assembly, Fashion Week, major parades, and so on.
The MTA has yet to release any service changes ahead of the 9/11 Memorial Ceremonies.
