The New York City Marathon is one of the most iconic running events in the world, and securing your spot for the 2025 race requires some planning. With only 50,000 spots available and in high demand, in order to properly register for the NYC Marathon, it is important to understand the process.
What are the main ways to register for the NYC Marathon?
· 🎟️ The Drawing (Lottery System): The most popular method of entry is the non-guaranteed lottery system called “The Drawing.” Applicants are divided into three categories: NYC metro area residents (within 60 miles), national applicants outside of NYC but within the U.S., and international applicants.
· 9️⃣ 9 + 1 Program: This option is available for New York Road Runners (NYRR) members. To qualify, you must complete nine NYRR races and volunteer at one NYRR event in 2025. Completing this program guarantees a spot for the 2025 marathon.
· 🆘 Charity Runs: Another way to secure your entry is by fundraising for a charity. You can join NYRR’s Team for Kids or select another official charity once the list is published. Note that minimum fundraising amounts vary.
Are there other guaranteed entry options?
- 🏃 Legacy Runners: If you have finished the NYC Marathon at least 15 times, you are eligible for guaranteed entry.
- ❌ 2024 Cancellations: Runners who registered for the 2024 marathon but had to cancel due to illness, injury, or other valid reasons (one-time eligibility) will also be guaranteed entry for 2025.
- 🛬 International Tour Operators: If you live outside the U.S. some travel companies offer marathon packages that include a guaranteed race entry.
