Breakfast lovers can rest easy: Absolute Bagels has reopened on the Upper West Side, so start mapping out your order for the a.m.
New Absolute Bagels, as the shop is formally known, began welcoming customers on December 29th, and practically instantly, a line wrapped around the block on its opening day. (We take bagels seriously in this city.)
Locals are certainly pleased to see their go-to morning staple has made a comeback, and those from the outer boroughs won’t mind schlepping uptown for a bite of one of the city’s best bagels and schmear — especially after its lengthy hiatus. If you find yourself at a loss of what to do during this unusual time between Christmas and New Year’s, perhaps you should get reacquainted with one of New Yorkers’ go-to spots. New Absolute Bagels finally reopens after months-long hiatus
The Absolute Bagels saga started roughly a year ago around the holidays, when customers were shocked to find that the store abruptly closed without any warning; reports suggest a failed health inspection was to blame.
Even though the shop is still operating in the same location — 2788 Broadway, between West 107th and 108th Streets — customers can expect some changes to New Absolute Bagels. According to real estate brokers, the family who originally operated Absolute Bagels, the Thongkriengs, are no longer involved. However, old employees have resurfaced for this new chapter.
News broke in spring 2025 that the shop would reopen, and judging from the community response, it seems it was worth the wait. Now that things are back up and running, albeit a bit differently, the love for the treats remains consistent. If you need us, we’ll be making our way there Saturday morning for an everything bagel and plain cream cheese.
