Breakfast is back on.
News of Absolute Bagels reopening on the Upper West Side piqued New Yorkers’ interest, and some of us are already carefully planning our early-morning order. (A cinnamon raisin with cream cheese.)
According to the West Side Rag, the viral bagel shop began putting up signage on Monday, April 14th, after its abrupt December 2024 closure. Since we are a city that takes its bagels seriously, this was a bold move that did not go unnoticed.
Even though the shop is reopening in its same location — 2788 Broadway, between West 107th and 108th Streets — things will look a little different for the business’ next chapter. A sign called “New Absolute Bagels” replaced its original striped awning. According to real estate brokers, the family who originally operated Absolute Bagels, the Thongkriengs,
are no longer involved. This will be a venture from new partners who own bagel shops throughout NYC and New Jersey.
Back in mid-December, in the midst of holiday confusion, New Yorkers woke up only to realize that their favorite morning pitstop was permanently closed with no signs of returning. Reports indicate that a number of health code violations ultimately caused the storefront to shutter, including live rats and roaches, as well as improperly labeled pesticides. This was a repeat offense, as the store temporarily closed in 2017 after a health inspection.
Like the new owners’ identity, the opening date remains elusive. We’ll keep you informed when more information is available, so watch this space for updates.
