[DISCLAIMER this article was for April Fools and is not real]
The MTA is launching a first-of-its-kind pilot program for one day only, letting riders pay what they wish for subway and bus fare. The pay-as-you-wish concept is a popular payment type for many NYC establishments and the MTA is doing a trial run to see if it proves as successful for them. Find exact details below:
When is MTA’s pay-as-you-wish fare date?
Riders will be able to take advantage of pay-as-you-wish fares tomorrow only, April 2, 2024, from 12am to 11:59pm.
Why is the MTA launching pay-as-you-wish fares?
The MTA hopes to expand accessibility across NYC’s transportation system to all New Yorkers. Thus, they’ve decided to apply the pay-as-you-wish model used across many NYC establishments and museums for years. This new initiative is just a trial run to gauge any increase in ridership and will be assessed after today whether or not the MTA will move forward with something similar to this solution in the future.
How will it work exactly?
The MTA has programmed all OMNY readers system wide for a new tap compatible feature that will generate an automated screen that lets the rider choose their exact payment. The press release likened the action to selecting or customizing the tip amount at a restaurant.
Is there a minimum fee?
Riders must pay at least $0.01 to ride. The suggested price is of course the current fare of $2.90.
Is there anything else to know?
This pilot program is entirely made up and sadly you still must pay full price to ride today. Happy April Fool’s NYC!
