After just being crowned the 2nd best city in the country for nightlife, it’s only logical New York City has received another accolade for how amazing it is. According to TikTok, New York City is the 9th most hyped city to visit in the world.
Though our bias is convinced we should hold the number one spot, data shows that Seoul is statistically the most hyped city with over one billion hashtag views.
The research was done by JeffBet, studying the volume of city hashtags on TikTok to ascertain which are the most popular cities to visit this summer. #travel, #travelguide and #travel2023 were combined with each city to further analyze which are the most hyped cities in the world.
Overall, four cities from Asia (Seoul #1, Singapore #5, Bangkok #6, Tokyo #10), five from Europe (Paris #2, Barcelona #3, Amsterdam #4, Rome #7, Istanbul #8) and one from North America (New York City #9) made it in the top 10.
New York had a total of 24,338,600 hashtag views on TikTok, with #NewYorkpizza specifically having 10.7 million views.
With the short-from video platforms’ rapid rise in popularity, TikTok has become a powerful search engine and resource. Information on millions of topics can be found in an instant on the app, and users are continuously more willing to research things such as travel recommendations on the platform.
“TikTok has become the go-to destination for those looking to fulfil their wanderlust. Today, the most liked, viewed and shared holiday destinations online are the ones people will travel to,” said a spokesperson of JeffBet. “Nowadays, the travel landscape has completely changed, as people are less inclined to travel somewhere based on an advertisement they see on TV or a brochure. Instead, those seeking a getaway would rather travel to a city visited through the authentic lens of TikTok, because it provides a realistic expectation of what to expect, including advice on each city’s hidden gems and off-the-beaten-track experiences.”
