In a move that’s turning heads across New York, MLB has launched its first-ever “Rivalry Weekend”, and it comes with a big surprise: all games are free to stream on MLB.TV. From May 16–18, fans can watch every rivalry matchup, including the highly anticipated Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees, at no cost.
The BIG storyline of the weekend will be Juan Soto’s return to the Bronx as a Met, adding even more energy to an already heated showdown. And now, fans don’t even need a subscription to catch it live.
MLB is using this year’s event as a test. If engagement and streaming numbers spike, the league may make Rivalry Weekend a recurring part of the schedule. With stars like Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, and more in action, there’s plenty of potential.
What Is Rivalry Weekend?
Rivalry Weekend is a new initiative by MLB that pairs off long-standing historical rivals for one weekend of action. Think Yankees vs. Mets, Cubs vs. White Sox, Dodgers vs. Angels—all happening in one stacked three-day stretch. The goal: bring playoff-level intensity to midseason baseball and give fans something to circle on the calendar.
Why Mets vs. Yankees Is Free to Stream This Weekend
MLB is unlocking its entire schedule for the weekend on MLB.TV, including all 15 rivalry matchups. For New Yorkers, that means the Mets-Yankees series at Yankee Stadium can be streamed free. This includes mobile, tablet, smart TVs, and more; no subscription or credit card required.
Mets vs. Yankees Watch Parties In NYC
In addition to streaming access, New Yorkers can join the action in person at two major watch party events. The World Trade Center will host free public screenings of all three Mets vs. Yankees games from May 16–18 at the North Oculus Plaza, featuring a massive outdoor screen, food and drinks from the Oculus Beer Garden, and pop-up fan experiences.
Meanwhile, Stout NYC (109 W 39th St) will be home to a live broadcast of The Michael Kay Show on Friday, May 16, from 1–3 PM. This will include special guests, giveaways, and free admission.
How to Watch the Mets vs. Yankees Series For Free
To access the games, fans just need to create a free MLB.TV account. From there, the Subway Series and every other Rivalry Weekend game will be available to stream from May 16 through May 18. It’s a rare opportunity to watch top-tier matchups, completely free.
This weekend is appointment viewing—and for once, it won’t cost a thing.
