It looks like Metropolitan Park is one step closer to becoming a reality.
The proposed $8 billion casino and entertainment center stationed next to Citi Field in Queens received an overwhelming majority in a 41-2 vote in the New York City Council. The Mets’ owner, Steve Cohen, is strongly advocating for the dream to become a reality, as it slated to also include a 25-acre green space, a hotel, a food hall, entertainment attractions, and beyond — an undertaking that will bring in 23,000 jobs.
“It’s time New York got the sports and entertainment park it deserves,” Cohen said in a statement. “Metropolitan Park delivers on the promise of a shared space that people will not only want to come to and enjoy, but can be truly proud of.”
Though it is clearly a major success in the City Council and the six community boards backing the project, there are other legal factors on the state level potentially standing in the way of the undertaking. (Similarly to the proposed casinos for Times Square, Hudson Yards, and Coney Island.)
In June, proposals are due for New York State’s Gaming Facility Location Board, and by the end of the year, the committee will award three licenses as the end of the year, per Gothamist.
In the meantime, you can gear up for the Amazin’ Mets 2025 season — and take a vintage train ride to the stadium on the home opener. As further details on Metropolitan Park are unveiled, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
